Toastmasters First Speech
Mr. /Madam Toastmaster, fellow members;
May I tell you a little about my wonderful life? I live just three blocks from the ocean with a beautiful flower garden. My 38 year old son, Lars is a wonderful daddy to my powerful 4 year old granddaughter, Alejandra! My dancing, counseling and six pack of dogs keep me very disciplined and healthy.
My very handsome honey, Tony, does everything around the house and supports me whatever I do. He is retired after 40 years at Safeway and made a great host daddy for our loving and brilliant exchange student. Anna was with us for six months, until February 1. We really enjoyed the daily hugs, kisses, joy and other teens she brought into our lives. We even had a second trip to Hawaii last year, to share it with her and I rode my first wave, successfully! We still Skype and stay connected by phone. In just a few months, we will visit Anna and my oldest sister in Germany.
Last year, as first generation college graduate, I completed my BSN through CSUDH. My 19 years as a case manager include the commute to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital as an Oncology Nurse and 11 years experience as a Santa Cruz Hospice Caring Project Home Care RN. Last year, I also became a travel agent and entrepreneur.
My life wasn’t always so wonderful. Is it OK to tell you a little more? I am the only child who chose to have one child. All ten of my siblings; 5 brothers and 5 sisters, have two or more children. First thing I wanted to be when I grew up was a Veterinarian and I was told by well meaning parents that I was not smart enough. Next I wanted to be a Dancer, however, was told I couldn’t be a dancer because I might break a leg and then not be able to support myself. Can anyone relate?
Between the ages of 10 to 15, my childhood offered many opportunities for early responsibility and independence. For example, I was the only girl member of the Future Farmers of America, and my adventure consisted of taking people on pack trips with the horses, riding in the rodeo, both Brahma Bull riding and pole racing.
One day, I remember deciding to make a cake, when I was about ten years old. Well, the electric mixer cord is plugged into the wall and there I am feeling so grown up, daydreaming about how surprised and happy everyone will be. I was nearly finished, when all of a sudden the cord became unplugged from the mixer, slipping right into the batter. So I took a little lick, and WHAM! I could have killed myself!
Another day, I decided to use a liberal dose of paint thinner and used rags to help get the shop fire burning more quickly. Here I am with this brilliant idea, as I struck the match to the stove, Whooosh, all of a suden, I was left with no eyebrows and lots of stinky singed hair. My siblings didn’t even recognize me!
This adventurous past is where my love of animals and commitment to making things right began. Re-evaluation Counseling has provided a foundation to create an ability to act on my thinking, not my feelings, which is separate from reality and has enabled me to choose more effective behavior.
CONCLUSION VISION NEW BIZ-DIRECTION
Two years ago, I crystallized a vision of ensuring a caring and competent Nurse at every California bedside, when needed. To fulfill this quest, I have become a successful entrepreneur being of service to many organizations and businesses. I am a Dancing Nurse with 6 dogs. I am collaborating with county officials regarding a proposal to save the local animal shelter. I use the ten vows of success by Og and the following two RC commitments, to stay focused and grounded in reality.
I decide that, from now on, I will always be proud of myself and all others. I will remember that I can choose the viewpoint on my life experiences and current situation, which, gives me the most satisfaction. I am the perfect person to lead all people toward liberation. I can take complete charge of my mind and fulfill my wildest dreams.
Victoriously proclaiming my total innocence and discarding any shame or secrecy for what was done to me, as a child, I joyfully and proudly reclaim my most tender love for my sacred body, my control over my full sexuality, my unconditional love for myself and others, my full trust in myself and ability to rely on others, my connection with humans everywhere, my joy in life, my unbounded intelligence to think about everything, and my complete power and visibility, as a human with unlimited choice and impact in the world.
